Writing Workshop

Easy Blog Photo

This is my group's writing, we are writing up an experiment to find out if more or less weight makes the car go faster.

For this part of writing our experiment we have to write a discussion, a discussion about each other's car's test results and what what the results tell us about our hypothesis.

We could also include some ideas about what we would do differently if we repeated the experiment to improve it.  My group would only test our ideas on one car so the tests would be more fair than on all three cars because a different car goes a different speed.

With all of the testing we have been doing we figured out that medium weight goes faster than a heavy or lightweight car.  We think this is because the medium weight car pushes the car down the track but doesn't create much friction at the bottom of the track.  Not enough weight will not get enough potential energy converted into kinetic energy.  Potential energy is stored energy, kinetic energy is the energy of movement.

What A Drag

This term our topic is about aerodynamics, more importantly, drag. Mr. Peacock has thought up a fun way to teach us about drag by giving us each a simple car made of a block of wood, four wheels and a few nails. Throughout the term we will modify the cars to make them more drag resistant.

At the end of the term we will be having a drag race using a track we have borrowed from the local scout group to test out what we have learnt.

We are currently listening to a book about a girl named Zephyr learning about drag and how it affects her in a bike race.

Every Thursday the seniors go to the hall to meet our amazing champions.  Here we learn about different topics such as being brave.  We also have "Words for Life" which are quotes we learn and this week our "Words for Life" are "We are fearfully and wonderfully made".

We also do story time about people such as Jesus.  Then we do game time!!  Where we play fun games!  They are really fun!

Today we had a guest speaker Milair Ryalls come in to talk to us about Action Against Hunger. We are learning what malnutrition is and what people did to help others not starve. There are more hungry people in the world than the combined population of New Zealand, Canada and the European Union.

Equal Adjustments Strategy

Easy Blog Photo

At maths we are writing equal adjustment subtraction problems, my partner is Sequoia. We also have to finish work from yesterday.

Mr P writes: Equal adjustments is a mental strategy for solving subtraction problems.  We look for one number to make tidy (i.e. a number close to a ten).  We adjust this number then adjust the other number by the same amount.  This keeps the difference between the numbers the same.  That way we have changed the problem into a simpler problem with the same answer.

3D Printer

Easy Blog Photo

Maddie is changing the filament in the 3D printer. The filament is the plastic in the 3D printer. It is complicated to change and it takes about five to ten minutes. We are printing pentominoes, pentominoes are objects that are made out of five cubes and you can only make 12 of them.

In room 12 today we had Mrs Clark reliving while Mr Peacock was at a meeting.  In this video you can see Bella and Christie drawing 3D hands!

Pentomino Challenge

Easy Blog Photo

At maths in room 12 we are doing the pentomino challenge. The pentomino challenge is a challenge to find twelve different pentominoes and draw them in 3D.

Mr Peacock adds: A pentomino has five cubes joined together to make a unique shape.  These shapes must be able to be laid flat on one face and all five cubes be visible from the opposite face.  Charlotte has done a great job of experimenting to find eight of the possible 12 pentomino shapes. We are using isometric dot paper to help us to draw in three dimensions.

Our next goal is to use TinkerCAD to create a 3D file that can be printed using our school 3D printer.

Flexi Time

This is Isabella doing her spelling, she is on level three for spelling.  In spelling we "Say, sound , cover, write and check", this helps us to learn the spelling words. We get a different spelling sheet every week to learn.  We do Flexi Time at nine thirty every morning and go till morning tea.

At maths in room 12 today we ruled up our books for the year, This is Tasia's book.

Mr P adds - We are learning to use our rulers and be accurate and neat so that we can communicate our mathematical ideas.

Library Visit

At library time we choose our books and then read them until Mr Peacock calls out the first letter of our surname, then we go and get our books issued.  Every Wednesday we come to the library to change over our books from last week.
