This term Elmgrove have been focused on empathy. We have been watching videos from Class Dojo so that we can learn more about empathy.

Reports
It's almost time for the end of the year "yay" and we're getting sorted for school reports. Report photos have been taken, class photos have been taken and Year 6 photos as well now for our reports. As the reports are coming the class has probably been working really hard to get work done.
I've taken a photo of Anthony's hard work on his Year 6 memoirs and there's a video of rm 12 working hard writing their memoirs. The Year 5s are writing about what their favourite season is. (spoiler alert) Mine is summer! Joel R.
Hand Writing And Flexi Time Passports
We are practising handwriting in Flexi Time because we need to learn how to write neater. In handwriting we are learning to write on a slope, write faster, shape our letters and keep them the same size. At the start of the term we all copied out the same poem called “The Ants at the Olympics”. In week four we all got to chose a different poem to copy out in handwriting. By copying out the poems we are also memorizing them.
Our passports show where we are allowed go in the senior syndicate to work during Flexi Time. Everyone has different level access. At level one you're only allowed in your whanau room and maths class. There are only five levels of access.

What A Drag
This term our topic is about aerodynamics, more importantly, drag. Mr. Peacock has thought up a fun way to teach us about drag by giving us each a simple car made of a block of wood, four wheels and a few nails. Throughout the term we will modify the cars to make them more drag resistant.
At the end of the term we will be having a drag race using a track we have borrowed from the local scout group to test out what we have learnt.
We are currently listening to a book about a girl named Zephyr learning about drag and how it affects her in a bike race.
Wonder
This is Wonder, the story we have been reading for months now. This chapter is sad when August's dog Daisy went to the vet because she was very sick and old. Then mum and dad came home but something was missing, Daisy was put down. Then August went to his room and looked at his mountain of toys and teddies. He climbed into the mountain and cried. We felt upset reading this chapter because it reminded us of our pets.
Ti Rakau
Shannen and Ashleigh have been working together to practise a maori song called Tutira mai nga iwi, a maori stick game. This picture shows Shannen and Ashleigh throwing their Ti Rakau to each other. While doing all the actions, they were listening to the song too. In order to make the Ti Rakau we needed to:
- Roll up two magazines each
- Cello-tape them
- And if we wanted, cover them
The way we made our covers were by:
- Get two pieces of A4 paper
- Either using black, red and white ( Maori colours) or doing your own colours.
- Make patterns on the paper and then cello-tape them on to the two Rakau’s

And learn’t the actions. The name of the next song we are going to be learning is called E Papa Waiari. We are really enjoying this. Some of us are even colouring in covers at break times!
100 Word Challenge
Every week rooms 9, 10 and 12 do the 100 word challenge. We have to write one hundred words. Every week there is a prompt. Sometimes the prompt is a picture or a sentence/phrase.This week we had to use the words Flamingo, Black, Extraordinary, Poked and Underneath. We do the 100 word challenge on the computer. On the last day we have for flexi time we have to comment on people from Westburn Schools work. When we comment on the kids for Westburn School work we have to write two stars (2 good/positive comments) and a wish (something we want them to do/improve). Westburn school is supposed to comment on our work, but none of us have received a comment from them ... yet!
Persuading
This is room 12 using persuasive writing we are learning to persuade people to stop and think about what's happening around the World so that we can have a healthy world and so that our grand- children's grand-children live a healthier life.
Do you know how to write persuasively ? Well room twelve does.
We've been learning how to “persuade” people. We sometimes persuade our parents. For example:
For
I think we should be able to spend our pocket money in whatever way we want because we have earned it by doing work.
Against
I don't think we should be able to spend our pocket money in whatever way we want because it's our parents money in the end , also if you want to buy a playstation your parents might not approve of having one.
“For” means that we want it , Against means we don't think that it should be that way.

IT'S MATARIKI Yay
Today is Matariki woo hoo! Who knew that Maori New Year would come so quickly I still remember back two years ago when we went to Alexandra to go camping. It's like it was yesterday, that's crazy because in 2012. I was moaning & groaning saying mum when's Christmas but like I said it's Maori New Year 2016 so I'm going to work (at school).

Robert Hoover (the New Kid)
This is Robert he moved to Mosgiel from Cromwell. He is one of my best friends, we get along really well. We always play together and we stick with each other at all times. Look out for each other and stay safe.

I'm Joel and I'm reading whale watch by Geoffrey J. Cox. Here is part of the story:
In 1792 only 23 years after captain James cook first sighted in New Zealand, the whaling ship William and Anne visited these shores: the era of commercial whaling in New Zealand had begun.
I had fun finding whales.
Singing (Matariki)
Now we've got singing. We are singing Ko Matariki e, the Haka and Kia ora. If you are coming to Elmgrove Matariki you will hear us sing. Not at Silverstream, not East Taieri or Taieri College, not any school in Mosgiel apart from Elmgrove.
CRE
We listening to a song we are learning about purpose, bravery and strength. We have already learnt a lot in Champions. We have learnt about Moses and this week we are learning about attitude. We watched "Kid President" (he is funny) and we got some good advice from him.
Be strong and courageous.
Room 12's Book
Room 12 have been reading the Jungle Book for weeks now and we're about halfway through the book. Everyone did a maze for StickyTV and on Wednesday we are be going to the movies to see the new Jungle Book movie. I'm very excited about this. The new movie isn't like the cartoon version it is a realistic version of the Jungle Book.
Grace's Creation
Today grace started printing a cool design off using the MakerBot 3D printer. She had designed it at lunch and she made a tiny mistake. She accidentally must of pressed the wrong button on the computer which made it quite big. Look down below too see the cool design.
Buddy Reading
I'm here with my cute new buddy his name is Ollie and we're doing buddy reading. You can see Ollie in the video down below saying we're doing buddy reading.
My Mihi
Hi I'm Joel and this is my Mihi for 2016. In term 1 the Moa team got together to write our mihi for 2016. We all gathered together in room 11 and split the classes in to groups. Tthere were groups of A, B and C. Group A used Google docs to write their mihi. Group B took there photos. They had to use a blank wall for example outside room 12 there is a sort of creamy colour. Finally Group C went over to the mud hill to get a good view of the Saddle Hill and practised sketching it.
